Walki Fibre-based anti-skid end discs for secure and recyclable paper reel packaging

Protect your reels. Simplify logistics. Move towards circular packaging.

Paper reels travel thousands of kilometres before reaching converters, printers or packaging plants. During transport and handling, the reel ends are highly exposed to mechanical damage, moisture and load instability.

Walki®Disc / Gripcoat™ Disc provide a smarter solution.

These fibre-based outer end discs combine mechanical strength, moisture barrier protection and certified anti-skid performance in one integrated solution. The result is safer reel transport, reduced packaging complexity and packaging that fits perfectly into the circular fibre economy.

Designed with a high-strength fibre core and PE coating, Walki discs protect reel edges while maintaining the flatness and stiffness required for high-speed automated packaging lines.

Even more importantly, the built-in Gripcoat™ anti-skid technology eliminates the need for rubber mats, improving logistics efficiency and sustainability.

walki disc - Certified Anti-Skid Performance

Walki has produced Gripcoat™ anti-skid end discs for more than 20 years, offering the only certified fibre-based outer end discs that meet strict transport safety requirements.

Key performance:

  • Dynamic friction coefficient > 0.6 µ (disc on disc)
  • Certified by DEKRA and PTS
  • Fully compliant with VDI Guideline 2700 Blatt 9

This means paper reels remain stable during stacking, transport and unloading — even without rubber mats.

Traditional reel transport often relies on rubber anti-slip mats, which create several challenges:

  • heavy and difficult to handle
  • not recyclable in fibre streams
  • additional cost and logistics complexity

Walki®Disc / Gripcoat™ Disc integrate anti-skid performance directly into the packaging, delivering a cleaner and more sustainable solution. Benefits include:

  • safer reel stacking
  • simplified logistics
  • reduced packaging materials
  • improved recyclability
Recyclable paper

Walki®Disc solutions are fibre-based with a thin PE coating, designed to enter standard paper recycling streams.

Typical composition:

  • ~90% fibre
  • ~10% PE-coating

The fibre and PE can be mechanically separated during recycling, allowing the fibre to return to the material cycle.

This makes Walki discs a natural fit for companies transitioning towards circular packaging solutions.

Walki Disc / Gripcoat - PPWR ready

The upcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) will require all packaging placed on the EU market to be recyclable by 2030.

Walki®Disc / Gripcoat™ Disc are already designed with this future in mind. They:

  • support recyclability in paper waste streams
  • comply with EU packaging legislation

By choosing fibre-based reel packaging solutions, companies can prepare early for regulatory changes while improving sustainability performance.

Research & Development

Technology & Innovation Behind

Technical Competence Centres

Our Technical Competence Centres in Finland, Germany and France support the continuous development of Walki®Disc / Gripcoat™ Disc solutions for paper reel packaging.

Here, our experts optimise fibre-based board structures, PE barrier coatings and Gripcoat™ anti-skid technology, validating friction performance, mechanical strength and runnability on automated reel packaging lines. Through ongoing testing and material development, we ensure reliable reel protection, transport safety and solutions designed for recyclability and circular packaging systems.

Advancing fibre-based solutions for secure paper reel transport

At Walki, we continuously develop and optimise our Walki®Disc / Gripcoat™ Disc solutions, combining decades of expertise in fibre-based materials with advanced coating technologies.

Our production capabilities integrate PE barrier coating and Gripcoat™ anti-skid treatment, enabling us to manufacture high-performance fibre-based end discs that protect paper reels during storage and transport while maintaining recyclability in standard paper waste streams.

This ongoing development responds to the increasing demand for safer, recyclable and fibre-based reel packaging solutions. It represents an important step in our commitment to deliver reliable materials that enhance load security, reduce the need for additional transport materials such as rubber mats, and support the transition towards a circular fibre economy.

Fibre-based outer end discs used to seal and protect paper reels during storage and transport. They combine mechanical protection, moisture barrier and anti-skid performance.

Paper reels are often stacked vertically during transport. Without sufficient friction, reels can slide and cause damage or safety risks.

Yes. The integrated Gripcoat™ anti-skid surface eliminates the need for rubber mats between reels or on truck floors.

Yes. They are primarily fibre-based and designed to be recycled in standard paper waste streams.

Yes. They comply with EU packaging legislation and are PPWR-ready, supporting recyclability requirements for future packaging regulations.
