Less complexity, more circularity

  1. Products
  2. Flexible packaging

Made for performance. Designed for recycling.

walki blown film extrusion technology
  • Walki monomaterial film structure

At Walki we apply monomaterial concepts across flexible packaging and barrier film applications. Our portfolio includes:

    • MDO + PE (machine-direction oriented PE)
    • MDO + Barrier PE
    • XDPE + PE
    • PE (monolayer)
    • PP (monolayer)
    • OPP + OPP

By relying on one polymer family instead of multi-layer mixed materials, we enable: easier sortation, more efficient recycling and better quality recyclate. These materials maintain good barrier, sealing and mechanical properties while streamlining production and logistics.

  • Walki’s monomaterial film structures are designed from the ground up to meet the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) requirements for recyclability by 2030. Whether it’s MDO + PE, PE + PE or PP + PP, each construction is based on a single polymer family to ensure compatibility with established recycling streams.

By eliminating mixed layers and focusing on one material type, our monomaterial solutions make sorting and recycling straightforward, resulting in higher-quality recyclate and less waste. This design approach not only future-proofs packaging for evolving legislation but also supports brand owners in achieving circular-economy goals without compromising barrier performance, shelf life or visual appeal.

Every Walki monomaterial film — from high-barrier PE laminates to lightweight MDO films — is PPWR-ready by design, enabling a smooth transition to tomorrow’s fully recyclable packaging landscape.

Walki Experts

Meet Juan Ángel Ruiz, R&D & Materials Manager at Walki Plasbel. In our Walki Experts series he discusses how Lamibel®MDO-PE laminate combines high barrier, mono-material construction and full recyclability into one package. Learn his view on how this innovation drives the packaging industry towards circular-first.

Where simplicity meets performance

A refined portfolio of PE- and PP-based structures engineered for clarity, stiffness, sealability and circularity. From MDO-enhanced stiffness to high-barrier PE laminates, each film is designed to do more with less — and recycle the right way.

MDO-PE + PE

Lamibel®MDO-PE is a mono-polyethylene structure designed for high stiffness, transparency, and recyclability while using less plastic overall. Advanced orientation technology aligns polymer chains to reduce film thickness and maximise performance. Ideal for frozen and chilled food packaging, Lamibel®MDO-PE offers an excellent balance of strength and sustainability, making it a PPWR-ready alternative to traditional multi-layer films.

MDO-PE + Barrier PE

Lamibel®MDO-Barrier PE combines machine-direction-oriented polyethylene with a high-barrier PE layer to protect against water vapour and oxygen while maintaining full recyclability. Approved by RecyClass as compatible with the flexible PE recycling stream, it delivers superior product protection and aligns with EU PPWR 2030 goals for circular, high-performance packaging.

XDPE + PE

Lamibel®XDPE combines the optical clarity of LDPE with the mechanical strength and high stiffness of HDPE, creating an ideal alternative to traditional LDPE. This structure enables downgauging, using less material without sacrificing performance. Available in matte or glossy finishes with low SIT and excellent transparency, Lamibel®XDPE is fully recyclable thanks to its pure PE composition and supports film reduction and resource efficiency.

PE (monolayer)

Lamibel®PE is a high-quality polyethylene film recognised for its excellent processability and seal performance. Available as a single layer or for lamination, it can be sealed on one or both sides and comes with a low Seal Initiation Temperature (SIT). The film offers good stiffness, transparency and sealability, making it ideal for a broad range of applications, including frozen and chilled foods. Lamibel®PE supports circular packaging goals.

PP (monolayer)

PP is a polypropylene monolayer film known for its excellent stiffness, optical clarity and easy processing. Ideal for snack and dry food packaging, it offers effortless opening and premium printability for strong shelf appeal. Available in matte or glossy finishes, it delivers both functionality and an elegant appearance while remaining fully recyclable within the PP stream.

OPP + OPP

A polypropylene-to-polypropylene laminate that delivers exceptional stiffness, gloss, and printability. This mono-family structure provides a crisp, easy-to-open feel with outstanding optical properties, making it a classic choice for snack packaging. Available in high-gloss or matte options, OPP + OPP ensures good shelf presentation and compatibility with PP recycling streams.

Sustainability Focus:
Designed for circular performance

At Walki we believe packaging should support a resource-efficient and circular future. Monomaterial films reduce complexity, enable higher quality recyclates and help minimise waste, both packaging waste and food waste (via improved shelf-life). Our solutions contribute to lower CO₂ emissions, less raw-material use and simplified end-of-life processing.

Designed for circular performance
Our mono-material films are engineered for circular economy principles:

  • Single polymer stream → easier sorting, less contamination.
  • Reduced film thickness → less plastic overall, lower weight, less transport energy.
  • High-quality recyclate → enabling second-life applications.
  • Repeatable cycle → designed to be recycled again and again in a closed loop.

Designed for recyclability and beyond

High Barrier. Pure PE. Designed to Recycle

RecyClass-Approved Barrier PE Laminate

Walki’s Lamibel® MDO-PE Laminate HB sets a new standard for circular packaging. This barrier structure has been officially recognised by RecyClass as fully compatible with the flexible PE recycling stream in Europe, proving that barrier performance and recyclability can coexist. Made with over 95% PE, the laminate protects food against oxygen, moisture and odours while avoiding the mixed-layer complexity of traditional films. A breakthrough that supports food safety, reduces waste and aligns with PPWR requirements for 2030 and beyond.

“This laminate shows that barrier and full recyclability can go hand in hand. It protects food, reduces waste and fits seamlessly into the PE recycling stream.”

Where advanced extrusion meets premium printing

Extrusion engineered
for next-level packaging.

Walki brings together one of the most extensive extrusion capabilities in the industry with cutting-edge printing technology. With more than 26 blown-film extrusion lines, we produce high-quality PE films, MDO-PE structures and certified compostable films at scale. Our facilities are equipped with next-generation flexographic presses capable of water- and solvent-based inks, as well as state-of-the-art digital printing for fast, precise and visually striking results. From film extrusion to final print, every step is controlled in-house, ensuring consistency, speed and premium quality for the world’s leading brands.

A monomaterial film is a packaging film made primarily of one type of polymer (for example PE or PP). By using a single polymer family, sorting and recycling become simpler and more effective.

Lamibel® MDO-PE is a film where the outer layer is MDO-PE (machine direction oriented polyethylene) and the inner film is PE. The mono-material structure enables the entire film to be recycled through the PE stream while delivering high barrier, clarity and process performance.

The film offers excellent barrier to gases, moisture and odours, thereby preserving product quality and freshness for a longer period. That leads to reduced food waste and better product integrity.

Walki’s monomaterial films are designed for compatibility with standard recycling streams (e.g., flexible PE stream in Europe). They have undergone independent assessment (e.g., via RecyClass) and meet the requirements for recyclability.

Because legislation (such as PPWR), consumer expectations and recycling infrastructure all increasingly point to mono-material, recyclable packaging. Choosing monomaterial films now positions your brand ahead of the curve with sustainability, cost-effectiveness and circular economy readiness.
